The NIOA Newsletter - April 2022 Edition

We need your help - we are looking for locations to fill out our year and want to make sure the topics we train on are relevant. If your facility is willing to host 25-35 wastewater professionals for a couple hours, please contact one of us here. We are not just interested in municipal wastewater plants - industrial facilities, fish hatcheries, composting facilities - we are interested in learning!

Reminder from Sarah Hudson, Director Water Resources & Infrastructure Planning Program

Dear Drinking Water and Wastewater Utility Managers:

The 2022 Indiana Finance Authority (“IFA”) Regional Water Planning Meetings dates and locations are now available on the IFA website.  https://www.in.gov/ifa/regional-planning-meetings Please review the map to find the meeting scheduled for your area and plan to attend. The purpose of the meetings is to build on the benefits that come from neighboring utilities collaborating to solve similar issues. Utilities may attend a regional planning meeting that is not specific to their location, but the intention is that they eventually do so to interact with their own neighbors.

As a reminder, utilities are required to attend at least one regional meeting a year. As described in IC 5-1.2-11.5-5, the IFA’s role is to set up and facilitate the meetings; the utilities’ responsibility is to attend at least one meeting per year, set the agendas, and report attendance to the IFA. Attending a meeting is required for funding assistance from the IFA. The IFA tracks attendance on a 12-month rolling basis. For example, if your utility attended on April 2, 2021, your utility meets the requirement of the rule until April 2, 2022. The list of utilities who have attended a regional meeting is available on the IFA website.

Additional Training Opportunities

IWEA/AWWA/AIM Joint Utility Management Seminar. April 26 @ 8:30 am-4:30 pm. The Utility Management Seminar will be hosted on April 26th at Bowen Engineering Indianapolis, IN. This year’s seminar focuses on regulation and finance. Among the topics covered will be cybersecurity and other AWIA requirements, ARP funding, interpreting your financial statements, asset management plans, fostering innovation, new permitting requirements, operator certification testing, and the lead & copper rule. This is an excellent opportunity to invite your utility leadership to attend with you, as multiple topics spanning all water and wastewater utility management will be discussed. Registration closes April 19th.

IWEA Wastewater  Challenge. Round up your team for IWEA’s Annual Wastewater Challenge coming up May 17th at Brownsburg Wastewater Facility and get a chance to compete at Nationals at WEFTEC 2022!  IWEA’s Annual Wastewater Challenge is a fun, educational experience for anyone involved in the wastewater industry. This event provides an opportunity to apply day-to-day skills through a series of hands-on activities and written quizzes.

Five committees – Laboratory, Operations & Maintenance, Residuals & Resource Recovery, Collection Systems, and Safety – create challenges in their respective fields. Teams consisting of four people from either the same facility or from several facilities compete against each other by following instructions for each challenge. Teams that have members from different disciplines in the industry have an advantage over those who do not. If you have a competitive edge, be strategic in prepping your team, or just come for the fun and comradery of the day!

To cap off the day, the Wastewater Challenge Committee hosts a reception, recognizing the winners of the day and provide an opportunity to catch up with your fellow peers.

The NIOA will pay all registration fees for a couple teams to participate! Contact any of your NIOA Officers for more information or check out IWEA's link.

Engineering Consultants & Contractors - please consider participating and recruiting some of your municipal clients to make this event successful!
